Comparison + Realistic December Bucket List

Ok guys, we’re deviating from outfit posts again today! Instead of regularly scheduled programming I’m here for some reflection and then a December bucket list. I hope you bear with me for what might be a longish post….

Do you feel like all you see on Instagram is picture-perfect tree picking and decorations? Everyone has the perfect decor that’s coordinated, trendy, and not overdone? Oh and they somehow magically have time to work, decorate AND shoot blog photos.

The other day I was complaining when I saw yet another person post a fun photo on Facebook of a party, outing, cookie day – how come we don’t get to do that?! How come our days off barely intersect and if they do, it’s add super odd times when we can’t do anything? All of this thinking just leads to endless comparisons and that can get VERY tiring.

I just don’t have the time or setup to take photos (which is why there isn’t an outfit post today!) with a husband who works an unusual schedule. We don’t have the chance to do festive outings like other people – nights and weekends aren’t days off for a resident.

Social media comparisons are a real thing and they feel even more powerful this time of year. It’s obvious to see someone’s decorations, and compare them to yours. Their Christmas events, and notice how you haven’t been able to go to events. Plus, so much on Instagram is built around retail – which I TOTALLY get and am not faulting. This isn’t my full-time job but I know how most bloggers make the majority of their income for the entire year in these few weeks.

So what does all of this mean? It means my Instagram feed won’t be a Christmas wonderland. I have normal life to live and that’s ok! I’m saying that more so for myself than for anyone reading – because the pressure to post epic pictures all the time is real. (And coming up with content for Instagram is my least.favorite.thing)

Instead I’m going to do the fun and festive things I can – but they probably won’t all be Instagram-worthy. And that’s ok. This weekend we are going up to Cincinnati with friends to check out Top Golf, eat, and shop. I’m sure we will get in some blog photos either before or when we’re there – I have to get back to outfit posts sometime! – but I’m ready for a fun weekend.

And while we’re on the topic of fun events, I do want to share my mini-bucket list. Short and sweet and to the point!

My December Bucket List

  • Drive around and see some lights
  • Drink Hot Cocoa by our tree – no TV!
  • Watch a Christmas movie
  • Make cookies

Have a great weekend everyone!
