decorating when you don’t like color

This might come as a shock, but I’m not a person that likes much color – either in my wardrobe or in my house!

I don’t want red walls, green anything, or orange in the house at all. I love the fact that every room has grey walls with white trim, and all our furniture is super neutral. Again, we’ve got lots of greys and blacks going on.

But as much as I love this neutral color scheme, sometimes you need to add some dimension to your space! So today I want to share three tips for decorating when you don’t like color. I’ve used all these solutions to add some character to my rooms without adding tons of color – odd I know, but it’s what I want and I LOVE how my rooms have turned out.

add greenery

No surprise here, but adding plants to your house – real or fake! – adds a ton of life and dimension. We have added a plant to almost every room, and I love the pop of green against our grey walls. The areas that get decent light have real plants, but our bedroom and bathroom have fake ones. Honestly fake plants are so lifelike these days that you can barely tell!

add texture

Adding dimension is a sure way to add some visual interest. Even items that are the same color, like white, can add dimension to a space if they have different texture. I love adding pillows that have textural details – pom poms, ruffles, tassels – but basic colors. They function as a neutral but aren’t boring! Or a rug that’s a basic white but is a super high shag can add extra dimension to your room. Woven baskets are another great way to add texture, and their storage aspect is a huge bonus!

add accessories

I don’t recommend buying a colorful couch, but I do recommend styling your bookshelves or fireplace mantle with fun and colorful accessories! You can swap out accessories seasonally or when you get tired of them, and they can go with any neutral. I’m currently starting to add blue and white ginger jars to our mantle, and they coordinate with the blue throw pillows on our couch. Accessories are an easy way to take a basic room to the next level and not feel too “trendy”! Plus don’t forget about candles – SUCH an easy way to add interest to a space!

I know that my house is more muted and traditional than many other 20-somethings. I don’t want flashy color or walls covered with posters, but I do want something interesting! And decorating without color doesn’t have to mean boring when you add the right texture and accessories.

My favorite places to shop are Homegoods (for decor!), IKEA (great faux plants!), and Target. I love the pillows at Pottery Barn but they are pricier, so just wait for a sale. I wish I had the patience for thrift stores or antiques, but I just don’t. I might try some around Lexington if I’ve got a day to spend, so who knows!

So what do you guys think – are you more open to color than I am? Or are you neutral-obsessed like me? Also I would love to hear of any more spots for home decor – let me know what I missed in the comments!
