running tips & essentials

One workout I always come back to is running.

I go through phases of running more or less, but I always am happy after I get a run in! It’s something you can keep in your back pocket and once you’ve built up that base, you can run at any time. So today I wanted to share some running tips and essentials!

gear

You need a pair of real running shoes – these are my favorite! They will wear out with heavy mileage or training for a race, so don’t be surprised when you have to replace them faster than other tennis shoes. I love local running shops for finding those perfect shoes. Let me tell you, a good pair of shoes makes ALL the difference.

My running game changed when I got wireless headphones. These Beats have made my runs so much less annoying! No more having to put headphones back in or fumble with wires. And they have a super long battery life so I don’t charge them often! Highly recommend! Oh and then you just need an armband to go with.

I always run with a hat because I don’t love wearing sunglasses, and I love to cover my face. I rely on my trusty Nike hat for all runs!

My favorite shorts are these from Lululemon or these Nikes. You really have to find a pair that doesn’t chafe on long runs – and trust me it will happen! So once you find a pair that’s comfy, buy a few pairs.

my tips

Start slow – don’t push yourself! I tried to run like five miles right off the bat and then got a stress fracture šŸ™ So start with the run/walk method – run 10 minutes, walk 5, etc until you can get up to a comfortable distance.

The hardest distance is building up that 3 or 4 mile base. After that it’s just time and endurance – but I really believe once you can comfortably run 4 miles you can continue building! Now that I have my base I can run 4 miles even if I haven’t run in weeks. Or even run more if I’m feeling crazy!

You also need to make a good playlist – the hardest part about long runs is not getting bored. I only ever ran a 12 mile training run (for my half marathon) but if you’re running a full marathon you’re going to need a lot of music for those 20-milers! Spotify is my lifesaver!

Oh and don’t forget to bring water for long runs, or plan your runs around water fountains. If you’ve got parks nearby I would really recommend the latter – much easier than carrying water.

Lastly, lather on that sunscreen before you head out!

Running is something I’ll always go back to. Even if I take a break and try other fitness activities, running is always there when I get bored of those other things. It truly is like riding a bike – once you build up that mileage you’re good to go! I also want to highlight the stress relieving aspects of running. It’s a great way to unwind and destress – trust me. I hope these tips are helpful to you, they’re all ones I’ve used and rely on to keep me going!
