For some of us, living away from family is just a reality of this season of life!
And unlike when you’re in college, now there are jobs and responsibilities that can make it difficult to travel around the holidays. My office is amazing in that it closes from December 21 to January 2, but hospitals obviously don’t do that. We’re so lucky that my husband’s program guarantees him either Christmas or New Years off — but that’s super rare for residents.
Last year we stayed in Lexington for Thanksgiving and celebrated just the two of us. It was definitely different but not as ‘bad’ as I expected! So I wanted to share some tips if you’re celebrating a major holiday away from your family and friends.
Bring a bit of home – make your favorite recipes!
Thanksgiving isn’t real if I don’t have my grandma’s stuffing. Last year I made it on my own and it turned out SO good. Just smelling it cooking and then eating it made my day! It’s honestly my favorite food of the year, so I knew I would be devastated without it. (I’m not exaggerating) If you have something that reminds you of home or makes you think of a certain holiday, ask for the recipe and make it!
Create your own traditions
Maybe you always wore matching PJs on Christmas when you were growing up, and now you want to do something as your own family. Do it! A tradition has to start somewhere! There is no one stopping you from putting your own spin on a holiday to make it more special. Maybe you and your husband love a certain food – include it in a holiday meal. Whatever it is, adding your own touch to a holiday is a great idea.
Don’t ignore the holiday
It might seem like a good idea to treat the day like “any other day” – but it’s not. Holidays are a time to stop normal life and spend time with the people in your life. My husband might have slept through most of Thanksgiving last year, but I cooked, lit candles, and ignored the work I needed to do around the house. It’s still a holiday even if you aren’t having a massive party! So take some time away from your normal routine to celebrate, even if it’s super simple.
This year my parents and younger brother are coming for Thanksgiving – we’re so excited! So I wanted to share some decor inspiration and fun serving pieces. I know my mom is already coming up with how we should decorate the table – but you can never have too much inspiration!
