Last week I went on a mini family vacation up to Duluth, Minnesota!
I love the North Shore and Lake Superior is gorgeous year round. Duluth is about 2.5 hours away from Minneapolis, so it’s super easy to get to. In previous years we have gone to another location in Northern MN but this year we shook it up and decided to head to the Twin Ports!
Here are all the details on what we did, where we stayed, and other information in case you’re interested in a weekend getaway. In the summer you’ll deal with more crowds, but there’s still a ton to do once the weather changes. Like most places in MN, nothing stops in the cold – so you can be sure that there are still lots of events and activities.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at the Pier B hotel, which is basically inside the harbor. It’s not in Canal Park, it’s actually before the lift bridge and by the DECC and Aquarium. It opened a year ago (maybe?) so it’s super new! The rooms were super nice and the public areas were great for a bigger group like ours. They also had an outdoor hot tub which I would have spent a TON of time in if I wasn’t pregnant! They had nightly fires for s’mores and the staff was great. Their restaurant was super convenient and a great central location.
What We Did
Skiing & Hiking at Spirit Mountain
I did not ski – pregnancy! – but I did hike around Spirit Mountain which was gorgeous. The views can’t be beat, especially after a fresh snow. Some of my family members skied and had a great time. It’s bigger than other hills in MN but not unmanageable, and they said it never felt too busy. Plus they have night skiing – so cool! Especially since it gets dark by 4:30 this far north. They also have tubing and cross-country skiing, so if you want winter activities, it’s a great spot!
Glensheen
The Congdon Mansion is a must-see if you’re in Duluth. I love historic houses and it was so gorgeous to tour in the winter. I had been in the summer, but seeing it decorated for Christmas and in the snow was magical. They go all out with Christmas decorations and the grounds are obviously just as pretty in the winter. We did a normal self-guided tour, but I would recommend their candlelight Christmas tours if your schedule allows.
Shopping at Canal Park
Canal Park is the tourist heart of Duluth in the summer, and it’s much quieter in the winter! We went to some of our favorite stores – Duluth Pack and Waters of Superior art gallery.
Where We Ate
The Pickwick
A Duluth classic! We had a big family dinner here because family members have been going to this restaurant for decades. It’s not trendy or cutting edge, instead you get great classic meals (steak, fresh fish) in a dark and cozy setting.
The Silos
The last night in Duluth we ate at our hotel restaurant – and it’s a fun new spot! They have a pretty wide-ranging menu so I’m sure you can find something you love. I had the nachos because that’s what I was craving, but next time I would probably get the wild rice soup and a salad. Everyone who got it said it was delicious!
I honestly love Duluth any time of year – and I’m happy we were able to get up there this year! It was a true winter wonderland with fresh snow and it wasn’t even super cold. If you’re in the Twin Cities and looking for a weekend getaway, I would recommend considering Duluth any time of year!
