One of our favorite parts of this house is our backyard. It’s fenced, private, and has mature trees. And it came with four raised beds with irrigation built in.
It’s getting warmer here which means we can start planting in a few weeks. It’s wild how early frost is over this far South! (We are in Zone 8) So I wanted to give the first of many updates on our gardening.
As a sidenote – it’s interesting how my content has shifted over the years and seasons. From primarily clothing, to mom life, to home updates and decor, this blog reflects my life at the time. So this year has (and will be!) a moment of *home*.
We had dirt delivered to fill the planters more. They were about half full because the previous owners – who only lived here for two years – didn’t use them. I also ordered a ton of seeds because we are planning on doing two planters of veggies and two of flowers. I’ve ordered:
- Green Beans
- Carrots
- Cucumbers
- Tomatoes
- Strawberries
- Raspberries
For flowers I’m hoping to plant –
- Dahlias
- Zinnias
- Cosmos
I figure that we will try it out this year, see what works, and re-evaluate for next year. Also, because of our warm climate, we can plant in late summer for fall and winter harvests (think squash!).
We have really tried hard to incorporate more fruits and veggies into our diet and having this garden will really help. We shop frequently for produce because we eat a lot of it! So even factoring in the cost of dirt, watering, and seeds, we should be spending far less on produce. Fingers crossed they take!
