I’ve had my Dyson Airwrap for almost 4 months and really love it! It’s not 100% what I expected – not in a bad way! – so I want to share some pros, cons, and overall thoughts with you.
Originally I thought I would be in the camp of “my hair dries and is styled in five minutes of use!” Well I have a TON of thick hair and even if it isn’t long, it takes a long time to style. So does the Airwrap cut my styling time in half? Not really. For some people it apparently does, just not me.
BUT my favorite part is *how* it styles my hair. In 30 minutes I can get a style that lasts for 3+ days.
I’ve never been able to get volume or a blowout style with a hair dryer or any other styling tool. My hair is so heavy that it just loses all volume right away. But I love how bouncy and volumized my hair is with the Airwrap – and it looks good for days!
The other thing to “know” about the Airwrap is that it has a huge learning curve. I probably used it 5 times before I knew how I wanted to use it. I followed videos but it’s still tricky to get the hang of it! There’s really no perfect way. Some people get the best results when they use it on dry hair. Some on totally wet. For me, I have to let my hair dry to about 70% and then using the curling attachment. If it’s too wet it just dries, without volume. But if it’s too dry, I don’t get any volume. Figuring out that right timing and consistency is key! I also get much better results when I use a heat protectant or blow dry spray. See picture below when I didn’t use a blow dry cream and didn’t take the time to use the cool shot. It didn’t look as defined and didn’t last more than a day!
Dress is Emerson Fry! I’m obsessed!
Be sure to use the cool shot function to lock the style in. And make sure you turn it OFF before taking the curls off the wand. If you try to pull them off while the Airwrap is still on it will make the curls come undone. Below is what my hair looks like on day 4 when I took the time to do everything correctly! Curly and cute in a ponytail.
OF NOTE – Dyson just released a new Airwrap – the Multi Styler – that has bi-directional barrels. So no more swapping out barrels depending on what side of the head you are drying. That is definitely the most annoying part but I don’t find it that inconvenient to swap them out while using. But if you’re buying new, definitely get the newest model.
My favorite attachments are the round brush and curling wands. I am waiting for them to restock the new longer barrels and then I will purchase that since my hair is so long now! If I want curls (not just bouncy volume) I still default to my trusty curling wand. I also just love the basic dryer attachment – easy to use and it works so quickly!
The obvious downside is the price. It’s $600 so it’s not in any way affordable. I’m also not going to try to convince you that it’s “worth the price”. It’s a fun tool and you pay for the novelty and Dyson technology. If you have short hair – like a bob – your use of it is very limited. If you have very long hair you might need additional (longer) barrels. Mid-length hair is the best use of the Airwrap for most scenarios. My hair is long now (half way down my back) and I still love how it works and looks – it just takes a bit longer. It’s also very large so hard to travel if you wanted to bring all the attachments. I do appreciate the beautiful leather case! It’s cute enough to sit out in my closet and easy to keep everything organized.
So do I recommend buying it? I don’t know if I truly can. It’s so pricey that I don’t think the use justifies the price! I got it for a birthday present and my husband and I try to gift things we would never buy ourselves – hence a splurge gift.
That being said, I’m happy I have it and love using it! For a while I didn’t know if I would overcome the learning curve and like using it – and now I’m obsessed with how my hair looks when I use it. It’s what I use to style my hair more often than not! So it’s becoming an essential part of my getting ready routine.
If you have a big birthday on the horizon and want a splurge gift idea, I would definitely recommend it. Let me know if you have any questions or styling tips that work for you!
