Splurge or Save: Fall Clothing Essentials

Often I talk about specific pieces I love – like a dress, pair of shoes, etc. But I think that there are wardrobe basics for every season that you can use to build outfits anytime. These pieces can form the foundation of our wardrobe and you can add accessories to change it up! So today I wanted to do a splurge or save: fall clothing. Generally, everything in “splurge” is over $100, everything in “save” is under that!

Statement Jacket

I’ve chronicled my love for jean jackets (and I wear them all year) but I think fall is a great time to have a statement jacket. I love my suede moto jacket and it really completes any outfit – I have a whole post about it here! I resisted buying it for a year because I didn’t know if I would wear it. Well I have to watch how often I wear it because I border on repeat-outfit-offender!

Vest

Another great piece of outwear for fall is a vest! I honestly didn’t have a vest until this fall because I always have borrowed my mom’s….thanks mom! So now that I’m not in MN it was time to get my own version. I’ve talked about how my utility vest is a wardrobe essential, and I think that a fall version is a great addition. It doesn’t get too cold in Lexington so it’s easy to wear over sweaters or shirts!

Tall Boots

I get so much wear out of my boots in fall and winter – and I love having both tall and short pairs to choose from! The ultimate tall pair of boots is the Lowland/Highland from Stuart Weitzman, but at $800 (!!!!!) that’s never going to happen. I do think they are boot perfection but spending that much on shoes is unrealistic for me haha. So I found another super cute pair from Nordstrom that are under $100! Imagine wearing them with jeans, skirts or dresses, anything!

Oversized Sweater

Wearing jeans and a t-shirt but need another layer? Well a sweater is your BFF for fall! I love oversized sweaters because they’re easy to wear and sooooo cozy. They might be gigantic but the oversized look is definitely in right now. So don’t be afraid of wearing a sweater that seems super big! Just be sure to balance your proportions and wear skinny jeans or leggings – I wouldn’t recommend a huge sweater with sweatpants (you’ll look like you’re swimming in everything!). My “splurge” is a Free People sweater that is making the rounds on Instagram – it has a super cute open knit style, and comes in some cute colors. I’ve contemplated getting it because I’ve seen it styled so many cute ways – so we’ll see!

Plaid Top

Oh plaid, too cliche to even mention? Of course you need something plaid in your closet for fall! There are really so many options under $100 so you shouldn’t have to spend more than that. But to keep with the topic I have two pieces linked below – both are super cute!
