We have lived in Lexington for one year – how insane is that!
We had no idea how much we would LOVE Lexington before we moved here. We love the size, the people, and how young the city feels. It feels so so different from St Louis – there are so many more young couples and families and it’s fun to be around that!
So since it’s been a year I wanted to share some of our favorite spots around Lex – all the places we’ve discovered in the past year that make us love this city.
We love eating – who doesn’t! – and that’s such a great way to get to know a city. We love venturing out to Windy Corner, such a great drive! For low-key dinners we love Goodfella’s in the Distillery District and Suggins. I walk over to Cup of Commonwealth at least once a week, and it’s my favorite local coffee spot. If I had to pick one date night spot I would pick Carson’s, it has yet to disappoint! We also love Ramsey’s, Magee’s for donuts and Pasta Garage. Let’s just say I love eating out!
We love biking and hiking and love how close we are to the Legacy Trail – we love riding out to the Horse Park! And whenever we have a big chunk of time it’s awesome to hike at Raven Run. We also ventured down to Berea to hike and want to get back there again this summer. Also we still haven’t gotten over how beautiful the farms are here – it’s just fun to drive around.
Because Lexington is so much smaller than St Louis or Minneapolis you can really “feel” the city more. You can feel the excitement before a basketball game. You can feel how excited everyone is during Keeneland and how downtown empties out on a nice Friday so people can head out there. It’s fun to see how the city changes with the events that are going on. We noticed this right away after we moved – you can tell you’re in Lexington, not somewhere else. The city has such a strong “feel” and it’s even more obvious in the summer when the University of Kentucky isn’t in session and it’s just locals.
We had no ideas about Lexington before we moved, but we love being here SO much more than St Louis. St Louis feels like a dream because we never really enjoyed being there. We obviously miss Minnesota but we are loving our time in Lexington!
I know a lot of people who are moving now – either starting or ending residency, or just moving for jobs! – and it’s definitely stressful. But I’m here to assure you that you can make a new place feel like home and that a new place isn’t always bad. We had no idea what to expect a year ago when we moved. I din’t think we could have predicted how content we would be and how much we would fall into a routine. It’s been a great year and we’ve made friends, made a home, and found some favorite spots.
If you’re considering visiting Lexington, I highly recommend coming in April or October so you can see racing at Keeneland! Read more to do over on Share the Lex or search #sharethelex on Instagram for some great content.
