another year gone!

Today is my birthday!

I wanted to take today to reflect on the best parts of the last year – I have to say it was probably my biggest year yet!!!!

I became a mom

Writing that is 100% insane. It doesn’t feel real that I have a daughter and I’m a mom!!! She’s napping in her crib right now and I’m sitting nearby writing this post. It feels like life before her was a dream, but at the same time I don’t think it’s fully “sunk in” that she’s mine. Does that make sense?

I mean it’s been 2 months so a short time in the scheme of things but a huge adjustment. And an amazing one! I wouldn’t go back to “before” even after a sleepless night or long day. Becoming a mom is the best thing ever and I love it so so much! Watching her grow up is so much fun already.

She’s smiling like crazy, cooing all the time, and is a really happy girl. We have been SO blessed with such a good baby and she makes my tiredness sooooooooo worth it – no question!

Also, I have to give a shout out to my husband. Becoming a mom has made my husband a father, and that has been a joy to watch! My husband has a physically exhausting job and he doesn’t have the luxury of going in late or taking it slow at work. But he never lets his tiredness stop him from soaking up every minute with her. Some days he only sees her for an hour before she goes to bed, and they spend the whole time together – she obviously loves her dad and lights up when he gets home! It’s like she is saving the biggest smiles for when he’s playing with her (for real).

I can confidently say there is NO way to prepare for becoming a parent. You can’t imagine the work AND the love. Is there a perfect time? No – and I know a lot of people think residency is a really bad time to have a kid. But we wanted to start a family and there is honestly no perfect time – and I’m so happy we have been blessed with our daughter!

we went to Hawaii

And it was such a fun trip! Hawaii is always a good idea despite the cost and travel time to get there. I wrote a general recap here and then a specific beaches post if you’re interested in more details. It’s so great to get away and we savored every moment of what will most likely be our last “big” vacation for a while.

I avoided negativity

This might sound silly but some years/times in my life I have become negative. It’s an easy trap for me to fall into and becomes an endless cycle! Over the past few years I’ve been more aware of negativity (or negative people) and their impact in my life, and I’ve worked to minimize it. I can honestly say this past year was happy and really low on the negativity! Life is SO much better when you’re positive and not being dragged down.

The last few years have been great and I hope this year will continue that trend! I’m excited for another year of watching my daughter grow, spending time with my husband, and enjoying Lexington. And I’m going to eat whatever I want today — bring on the ice cream cake!
