Outdoor Gear for Fall & Winter

Well the temps are starting to drop here in Minnesota (but it’s 70 today – so random!) but we are still spending a ton of time outside. I think this is going to be the winter of embracing the outdoors and just enjoying it – which honestly happens most winters up here. You really have to embrace the winter to not go crazy when it’s this long and cold!

Today I wanted to share the gear we are getting for winter so we can enjoy some family time outside. Just a note that this gear is probably *too much* if you live in warmer climates….we’re talking single digit temps here, not 30s 🙂

Since we love to walk with our Uppababy stroller (review here!) I purchased stroller mittens and a stroller cover. Blankets are not enough when it’s truly cold – they just get kicked off too easily. I also purchased some cleats/crampons for my shoes for when it gets icy.

For toddler girl clothing, I am hoping this Patagonia jacket will be good enough! It’s so hard to find a jacket that’s warm but not insanely bulky. We are sticking with our trusty Carhartt hat 🙂 Yes we have an adult hat because it’s easier to pull down to cover her ears. A friend recommended Bogs boots and we are loving them already. They are warm and super easy to get on.

For me, I have my trusty knee-length North Face! You really need a long coat when it gets super cold. I also love my LL Bean bean boots for cold and my Hunter boots as well. The Hunter boots are taller which helps but they’re a bit clunky to walk long distances in. If I’m really going to be walking I would rely on tennis shoes and the cleats I mentioned above. And don’t forget your Smartwool socks! Those from the cold north KNOW these are the best winter socks.

It might seem early to share some of these things but a lot of them will sell out! I was at Nordstrom earlier this week and they were mentioning how certain Sorels are already selling out (and they don’t know when they will get more – I got these!).

So as we head into these cooler temperatures I encourage you to prepare for the winter so you can embrace it like we (hopefully) will. The best way to enjoy winter is to have the right gear and not cheap out. Plus these pieces can last for years and years (or become hand me downs or sell them – there is a brisk market for Patagonia on Poshmark!). So get ready and prepare for those cooler temps 🙂
